Why Do You Need to Study a Foreign Language?

By: Stella Tabelon

Why do I need to study a foreign language?

I asked myself this question a long time ago.  It was during that time when my late sister who spoke 5 languages taught me how to speak Spanish at the age of 13.  I didn’t see the point way back then since there was no one in my place who spoke it, except my sister of course.  Then I got invited to an International Christian Youth Exposure and delegates came from 136 countries.  I had the chance to culture myself.  It was a life changing experience and his has led me to develop an appreciation for languages and other cultures.  That was all I needed to become hooked.  Here are some reasons why I think speaking foreign languages is a great advantage.

Career

In a career driven world, we do whatever we can to be ahead and speaking 2, 3 or more languages is a big plus that gets us the job.  I certainly never thought I'd use foreign languages in my future career.  I embarked on an intensive study in foreign languages, and even before and after graduation, doors of opportunities just kept knocking on my door, and they still do up to now.  For more than six years, I have been working with people from Latin America, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Egypt, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Korea and the Philippines providing English, Italian and Spanish tutorials, translation, voice-over and writing services to all types of individuals and companies, nationwide and worldwide.  All services are delivered online.  The demand for language skills continues to grow as governments, businesses and organizations build relationships with foreign interests.

Travel and Meeting People

Some of my great personal joys are meeting and helping people of different races, seeing exotic and historic sites which would be like going over the pages of history.  It is in interacting and talking to these people that impresses me the most.  In relation to this, I earned a degree in languages to make me understand them a little better.  I have wonderful opportunities to collaborate with people worldwide, I’ve met a lot of them who became my close friends.  However I don’t want my experience to stop there.  I want to make a difference in this world.

So now that I’ve shared to you why learning foreign languages is a big plus to people, it’s your turn to take that step forward in learning and open more global opportunities in your life like raising your businesses and/or employment.  It could either promote you or could give you the chance to travel the world and a lot.

How to Learn a Language Quickly

By: Stella Tabelon

The six widely used languages are English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Chinese.  Most people experience drawbacks in learning them.  They may be confusing but the drawbacks are only at the beginning lessons.  There will be no stopping you from learning more when you’re done with the basics.

English is my second language, Spanish my third and Italian my fourth.  I used to speak Japanese, but I wasn’t able to completely immerse myself and now it’s becoming rusty. The learning process brings me so much joy and passion in learning more.  It was crucial the first stage since I didn’t know the techniques back then.  Later I learned to pick up survival skills. I decided to invest time in using different methods to learn a language quickly.  It is a given fact that learning another language is not an easy task.  But there are shortcuts and tricks that you can use to make it easier.  These accelerated methods can truly lead you to language proficiency.

Let’s take a look at the methods I always use…

1.  Building Vocabulary.

Learning new words is the first step.  Try to remember the meaning, its spelling and pronunciation.  Make flashcards.  Write the word in front and write the meaning and the pronunciation at the back. Use the Link-Word technique or Word association to make learning easier.  Imagine an equivalent scenario or word in your native language.  Learn at least 50 words a day.  Read a word aloud three times before going to the next vocabulary.  Regularly review them aloud as well.  These will accelerate your learning. Always bring a pocket dictionary and flash cards with you, so when there are times that you’re stuck in a traffic jam or something, you can build your vocabulary or review the words you’ve learned.

2.  Learn the Sentence Structure

Most of my students from different parts of the world don’t like grammar.  Some love to dig up on it.  If you’re quite bored with grammar, start out with a brief overview of personal pronouns, singulars and plurals, prepositions, definite and indefinite articles, adjectives, and most importantly, pronouns.   You can learn verb conjugation later on. Just learn enough grammar at the start to get you by.

3.  Take a multi-faceted learning

Study Phrasebooks
Listen to Music and to audio clips
Watch TV or Videos
Read magazines
Practice writing in foreign languages

4.  Immerse yourself

Centuries back, you can only learn a second language by actually living where people speak it. Decades ago, the rise of schools and public education made it possible to take language lessons with a teacher or a tutor. With the immerging of the internet, you may now take English, Spanish, Italian, French and Chinese classes online by enrolling in Language Tour International (LTI)  You don’t need to leave the comfort of your own homes by going to school to take language classes.  You can save on gas and time spent in commuting because you can have classes in the comfort of your home, office or anywhere in the world.  You can set your schedule.  It will be at your convenience to choose when and where you are going to take language classes online. What is even more amazing is that you get to learn with native teachers as if you are conversing with them on your target language on a regular basis.  Immerse yourself in LTI.  This is actually the best way to learn a language or two.  You no longer have to spend so much time in looking for resources or teach yourself to recite the words or phrases correctly.

These methods will help you learn a foreign language quickly.  Just believe in yourself, establish a plan for learning then immerse yourself in LTI in the language of your choice.
